Two Moms Connect

Courtney is a young Mom who is struggling with caring for her preemie who has many special needs. Courtney had to visit a store in Frederick to pick an essential medical item for herself. The journey out of the house to the store proved to be too much for her baby who quickly became inconsolable.

At one time or another we have all heard that tiny wail of a baby who is in distress. It is heartbreaking. Another young Mom who worked at the store heard the crying and stepped in to help. As you might imagine, the sound of a baby in discomfort was upsetting customers and staff, and nobody knew what to do. Maggie approached Courtney and asked if she would like to bring the baby to a quieter spot in the store that would give her some privacy to concentrate on her little one.

The episode continued for an hour and a half with Courtney using all of her skills to try and calm her infant. Maggie stayed close by, supporting Courtney and redirecting interested bystanders. Finally, after a time the baby quieted and Courtney was able to head home.

A few days later, our CYM staff members heard the story from Courtney when they checked in on her. (Each of our parent partners is provided with a family liaison who checks in every few weeks) It was at this time that we made the connection: Courtney and Maggie are both part of our CYM family. Courtney was grateful for a stranger stepping up to assist her and for the genuine intention of safeguarding them until the baby was calm.
